FUNNY MISUNDERSTANDING AMONG COUPLES
Dad behaved quite unusual that wonderful morning such that amazed everybody including mum who had not been in a good term with him. She was curious to get the drift; his unusual submission was never a habit. It had been such a hilarious drama between them as they had communicated as couples only through signals and notes for the previous three weeks. Mum had wanted often to hold the olive branch but dad would be indisposed, this was why mum eventually chose to keep her peace.
He had returned from work a while ago now when mum
found his two A.T.M. cards chucked on the dining table and his briefcase
sitting deserted on the couch opposite the TV set. This was quite another dad!
Who could ever imagine he would forget his cards let alone abandoning them
intentionally? The truth was far from my imagination; perhaps he had deviated
from his habit of undue secrecy and suspicion and decided to involve especially
his wife in his banking but the reverse was the case. Dad grew humble in
everything, loyal to mum, responsible and caring to us children than anyone can
ever imagine. He became mild in speech and appearance such that betokened
contrite apology before mum who had rejected his sudden love. She thought if
had arrived his right senses he should speak up not by signals. Even though she
had deduced it was up to something strange happening to him but she wouldn’t
bother.
Meanwhile, Maxwell had returned from a job interview
but the description of his experience was rather ugly; ‘’It was an organization
of byzantine complexities’’. Plan went awry. Mum however, had consoled him
stressing that God’s time was the best. Maxwell had wondered why dad was still
in bed by 8:00 AM and such, woke him but to his regret. Dad felt startled at
the tap Maxwell gave him and so, blamed him furiously. Everybody was shocked.
His attitudes these days were scary and threatening. He would overreact over a
negligible issue but always return to apologize, this was why mum broke the
silence.
‘’What has come over you this man?’’ But he would be
silent. At a time he had behaved as though was recovering from trauma. My
gallant and ruddy dad became a baby overnight. Our peaceful home became unrest.
It seemed money was departing and there was no hope of its return.
When it came that dad must open up to us, the truth
was already half known. He told the story in a convivial evening, how it had
happened and his supposed knowledge of why it had happened. Mr. Raymond to whom
he had awarded a Ten Million naira contract was the demon in our home. Dad had
been duped and he had not told anyone because he half-knownknew no one would sympathize
with him. After all he was the banker and financial adviser of his money as he
never shared his financial budget with mum.
Worse, he had loaned half of this money from his
bank which will not find it a bit hard to find him when due. Emotional
devastation, numbing regret and restless mind were the pains he had been
nursing solely and us, hunger and boredom; since there was no money everything
was boring.
But for the savings of mum we would have had it
tougher than it was. She took responsibility of the family after dad’s
indefinite retirement though Maxwell especially of all us propped her squarely.
From my family’s encounter I came to realize that
shared relationship between couples is the soul of family happiness and
progress. There would be doom if couples cannot relate in one voice. Wife
should be the companion that she was meant so as to support husband in times of
decision making.
